WIND CAVE

Unlike the other two major caves in the National Park system, Wind Cave offers smaller, winding passages and a variety of cave formations, including box work. Entering the cave through the elevator building behind the visitor center, plunges you into the cave network which remains at a consistent temperature of 54 degrees. From here, the knowledgeable rangers enlighten and delight in stories related to the creation of the cave and it’s its many formations within.

During our 2021 road trip we had the opportunity to explore both subterranean Wind Cave on the Fairgrounds Tour as well as some Prairie Trails. Having both of these opportunities definitely gave us a greater appreciation for the land of the Black Hills and the topography of the area.

Wind Cave National Park is on the traditional and stolen land of the Cheyenne and Ochethi Sakowin people.
