CONGAREE

In the summer of 2017, we embarked on a road trip to Asheville, NC and along the way were able to visit three National Parks. After hiking in Shenandoah, on rocky and steep terrain, we were very excited for the flat nature of Congaree National Park. When we got there we went to the Visitor Center and got swept up in the promotional material for the Great American Eclipse, as Congaree was right in the path of total eclipse ( totality or bust ). As we left the Visitors Center, we embarked out on the Elevated Boardwalk Trail with the River Trail as our main destination. We quickly realized that it was spider season in the park, as we passed several large webs both on and off the boardwalk. While making our way out to the loop portion of the River Trail, Mike walked directly into a web and sent us both into a panic. Making it past the point of our comfort level, we promptly about faced after realizing there would be much more of this along the way. We jumped onto the Weston Lake Loop Trail which brought us back to the Boardwalk Trail, the Visitor Center, the car, and ultimately to the comfort of the Ruby Tuesday’s salad bar to eat our feelings.

Congaree National Park is on the traditional and stolen land of the Cherokee people.
